November 2020 – Ethan McKeown is a nine-year-old child in Hillsborough Township, NJ, who loves Legos, especially superheroes, The Lego Movie, and Woody from Toy Story. Ethan is learning to play the guitar and to swim. Ethan would also like to have a dog…but not just any dog. Ethan needs a service dog to keep him safe and help him manage his Autism.

How an Autism Assistance Dog Will Help Ethan

An Autism Assistance Dog will help Ethan in many ways, some lifesaving. His dog will be trained in behavior disruption to calm, comfort, and redirect Ethan when needed. His service dog will train to track Ethan if he wanders or runs off. His dog will also be trained in tethering so that when out in public with mom or dad, he can hold onto a short leash while the adult holds onto the main leash, and should he try and run off, the dog will be directed to go into a down and provide a lifesaving skill. Mom, Michelle, is also hoping that he and his dog will have an emotional connection that lasts a lifetime as they become the best of friends.

How the Community Can Help

It costs 4 Paws between $40,000-$60,000 to raise, train, and place a service dog. The families pay or raise a fee for service of $17,000. The family has raised some of the funds already but could use the community’s help to provide this lifesaving service dog and make Ethan’s dream come true. How to help:
