Recently, Pastor Rodney’s been very involved in India and have established a school Calvary Chapel Training Center or CCTC.
I was born and raised in Philadelphia as the son of a single parent. My mother was a hard working woman who managed to send my brother and me to Catholic school. I attended Catholic elementary school into high school, though I never saw the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
At the age of 9, I began a life that revolved around the use of drugs. Through elementary and high school, drug use was a part of my every day life, even going to school under the influence. I was expelled from Catholic high school and attended public school for my last two years.
By the grace of God, I graduated high school on time. Although I honestly didn’t remember those years, I do remember that upon graduation I could read, but I couldn’t comprehend or remember what I read. By this time, my whole life revolved around drugs.
In 1979, I joined the U.S. Navy and became a hospital corpsman, although for the first three years, I continued to use drugs. I was ordered to attend drug rehab, of which I successfully completed under false pretenses.
After accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I was shipped off to Okinawa, Japan and was stationed with the Marine Corps. In 1990, I received orders to Operation Desert Storm and went to El Jubal, Saudi Arabia. Upon arrival, we were placed in an airplane hanger with 2,000 other Navy and Marine service members. I remember placing my sea bag alongside my cot, grabbing my Bible and standing on a trash can yelling out, “In 30 minutes I’ll be teaching a Bible study at the light post, anybody want join me?” I was surprised, 40 men and women joined me in my first Bible Study in Saudi Arabia. I continued to teach every day for the duration of my duty there. Through a special program in 1992, I left active duty after 13 years of service, only to receive, to my surprise, a calling from God to North Carolina in 1995.
Meeting the Lord
Oceanside California, January 23, 1982, I was invited to a church revival by a street preacher, who I came across on a Saturday morning. To ensure that I attended the revival, the preacher suggested that he would go wherever I went that day until the revival that evening. Needless to say, I didn’t think this was a good idea as; again drug use was a part of my daily life. Unknown to him, I wasn’t planning to attend the revival, I wanted to party, and get high and hang out with my friends who were just like me. So I tried to get rid of him, but was unsuccessful.
That night, I was sitting in the church and heard the preacher say, “If there is one who would desire to give their life to Jesus Christ, get out of your seat and come down the aisle.” I felt as if the Holy Spirit lifted me out of my seat and I went down that aisle and gave my heart to Jesus Christ.
I was changed, new, born again and finally free. Free from sin, free from drugs, free from the bondage and chains that had a stronghold on my life. When Jesus came into my heart, my life was different, my heart felt different, I felt lighter as if I just cast off a heavy weight and now, I could see the world through different eyes. Transformation had taken place.
The day I met Jesus I also met my lovely wife to whom I have been married for 27 years.
After leaving active military duty, my wife and I began serving in various Calvary Chapels in Southern California. In 1995, we moved to North Carolina and began the very first Bible study in an apartment complex in Morrisville with 17 people.
We continued to grow and moved the Bible study from Tuesday evening to Sunday morning in a doublewide trailer with an attached garage that we converted into a sanctuary seating 72 people. With continued growth; we relocated to a building adjacent to a gas station. We used to laugh that you could fill up your car and go right next store and get your fill spiritually. From there, we moved to our current location where God has continued to add to the church.
I joined Bridge FM as a teacher nearly 3 years ago and it has been a privilege to be in a line up of programming with such great and awesome Bible teachers; men I had listened to for years and look up too. I’m not much of a radio guy, but I believe that God’s hand is with the ministry of The Bridge and God has blessed it. I’ll tell you something, “Wherever God is blessing, I want to be there.” It is a pleasure and my blessing to be a part of the Bridge FM family.
One of my favorite quotes: “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, about somebody, who can change anybody.”
I’m a witness and a living testimony; what He’s done for me, He can do for you.
May God bless you and keep you,
